Predisporsi all’ascolto, sintonizzarsi sull’identità e la memoria di un luogo tramite le immagini e i suoni di materie apparentemente statiche, inanimate. L’idea del workshop è quella di ridare vita a oggetti mediante l’osservazione e la stimolazione della loro superficie, un rivestimento, una pelle esteriore che è spia di una stratificazione interna, una dimensione affettiva e storica che è racchiusa in ogni cosa che accompagna la nostra esistenza. Ogni partecipante al workshop (di qualsiasi età e sesso) porterà con sé un oggetto a scelta, importante e identificativo per la sua vita attuale o passata. Insieme, esploreremo le sue potenzialità creative e sensoriali attraverso un approccio alternativo acustico e visivo, esaltandone gli aspetti più nascosti e profondi. Il contatto epidermico e caldo delle nostre mani con le superfici aspre o levigate di questi elementi, sarà il pretesto tattile per creare un linguaggio sonoro particolare, catalogando in modo immateriale queste presenze storiche, emotive, biografiche. Il percorso esplorativo e artistico di questo progetto si estenderà gradualmente, partendo da una dimensione privata che diventa sostanza collettiva quando l’interesse sonoro si estende al contesto urbano di Folkestone, per poi diventare memoria storica che ci spinge fuori città, fino ai Sound Mirrors, amplificatori naturali di passato e contemporaneità. L’estrapolazione dei suoni, ora, avrà una scala cittadina e monumentale, ampliando le riflessioni estetiche e acustiche a contesti sempre più aperti e collettivi. Il senso poetico e concettuale del workshop è in queste azioni che contemplano un rapporto intimo con la materia che si fa parlante, un dialogo personale e universale che lega l’uomo alle sue radici familiari e nazionali, ai luoghi di vita privata e pubblica che incessantemente si confondono nel loro continuo fluire.
Un grazie speciale a tutte le persone che hanno partecipato portando con sé un oggetto affettivo, una piccola parte del loro mondo e delle loro vite, donandoci i suoni per creare il lavoro che abbiamo realizzato durante la residenza a Folkstone: Amanda con un piccolo fossile, Cathy con la sua bicicletta, Chris con il poggiapiedi, Di con il portachiavi, Diane la coppa, Georgina il piatto, Harriet la palla di cristallo, Jacob la macchina giocattolo, Jamie il macinacaffè, Jim la ceramica sonora, Kairos il mixer sonoro, Lee il fossile di Warren, il reggiseno di Lili, il campanello di Nicola, la teiera di Oliver, il telefono di Ruth, un altro campanello di Sally, la lampada da tavolo di Sebastian, un piccolo synth, le ossa di seppia e legni di Tristan.

To attune oneself to listening, to tune into the identity and memory of a place through the images and sounds of apparently static, inanimate materials. The idea of the workshop is to give new life to objects through the observation and stimulation of their surface: a coating, an outer skin that reveals an inner stratification, an affective and historical dimension enclosed in everything that accompanies our existence. Each participant in the workshop (of any age and gender) brings with them an object of their choice—one that is important and identifying for their present or past life. Together, we explore its creative and sensory potential through an alternative acoustic and visual approach, bringing out its most hidden and profound aspects. The warm, epidermal contact of our hands with the rough or polished surfaces of these elements becomes the tactile pretext for creating a particular sonic language, immaterially cataloguing these historical, emotional, and biographical presences. The exploratory and artistic path of this project gradually expands, starting from a private dimension that becomes collective substance when the sonic interest extends to the urban context of Folkestone, then becoming historical memory that pushes us beyond the city, as far as the Sound Mirrors—natural amplifiers of past and contemporaneity. The extraction of sounds now takes on a civic and monumental scale, broadening aesthetic and acoustic reflections to increasingly open and collective contexts. The poetic and conceptual meaning of the workshop lies in these actions, which contemplate an intimate relationship with matter as it becomes speaking—a personal and universal dialogue that binds human beings to their familial and national roots, to the places of private and public life that ceaselessly intermingle in their continuous flow.
